Touch Therapy--The Science

Our bodies are subjected to environmental toxins, unremitting stress and overwork at a rate that would have crippled our ancestors. Their lifestyles naturally included the downtime needed to regroup when crops were harvested or the harbor was frozen over.
Not so today. With the marvels of modern technology, we can extend our workdays to  24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cell phones make us available to our workplace even when we are on vacation.

All of us have experienced the detrimental effects of stress in our daily lives but a recent Finnish study reported in the British Medical Journal showed the effects of stress could ultimately be fatal.

The study concluded that workers subject to job-related stress were twice as likely to suffer a heart attack.
The study defined job-related stress as insufficient time to finish tasks, little hope of job advancement and little or no control of workday schedules. Potential for job-related stress combined with stress of family/personal concerns can cross all language and cultural barriers. But it DOES NOT have to be fatal.

Bodywork is a term used to describe a variety of massage and bioenergetic services that use touch therapy to manipulate muscles and soft tissues for pain relief and relaxation. Touch therapy is shown to work out muscle stiffness, encourage the release of toxins, improve circulation, trigger the release of the body's natural pain fighters-endorphins.
These help the body relax by helping it find its way back to a state of balance experts in the field of holistic health call homeostasis. It is there that stress is relieved and the body can do the repair work it needs to encourage healing.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage usually features the use of aromatherapy essential oils possessing individual holistic properties to encourage deep relaxation, calming and balancing of tension. Essential oils are integral to the relaxation massage and are highly therapeutic in stress release due to their unique abilities to cross the blood-brain barrier quicker even than some prescription medications.
Some medications must first be absorbed in the digestive tract before they are absorbed and available for pain relief.

Light stroking massage techniques soothe and comfort. Offering the benefits of touch therapy to both calm and relieve stress and increase circulation. Special classical or mood music is chosen for its soft, rhythmic calming melodies and its unique vibrational healing capabilities.

 Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage features the use of deep pressure massage to manipulate tissues to release muscle tension and blocks. Great for stiff neck, back pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, frozen shoulders and stiff legs. It can be combined with the therapeutic thermal benefits of hot stones or heated rice neck pillows to further relax sore, knotted muscles.

Thomacine often combines deep tissue work with condition-specific acupressure massage and coach clients on self-care instructions which will help the relief last long past the original session. Depending on the severity of the condition, additional sessions are often beneficial to help muscles re-learns more relaxed states.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage features the use of basalt stones-a form of lava that has been worn smooth by water and time. Basalt stones hold and conduct heat more evenly than other stones and are used in the therapist's hands to stroke in alternately light and deep movements.
The stones are also placed on and under the body to conduct thermal benefits to specific muscle groups.
This modality is deeply relaxing and can be combined with deeper muscle work to encourage greater muscle flexibility.

Trigger Point Massage

Trigger points are felt as pain in areas of the body that do not necessarily correspond to the location of the trigger point. This phenomenon is called referred pain like the pain felt in the lower back when certain gluteus muscles in the buttocks possess trigger points.
   Thomacine
works one-on-one with clients to learn self massage techniques needed to release these pesky sites which often reappear due to a factors such as repetitive motions or influences, vitamin deficiencies or dietary problems.

Reflexology

Reflex points corresponding to organs and limbs are manipulated with pressure to achieve pain relief, rid the body of toxins, repair tissue or increase circulation. A deep sense of relaxation accompanies the session and encourages the body to release toxins and generate a greater sense of well-being and balance of body systems. It is considered beneficial for diabetics and those with chronic pain.

People need only remove shoes and socks for the session with many experiencing relief from allergies, headaches, sinus problems, asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, constipation, kidney stones, prostate problems, arthritis and menstrual distress.

The science: in a study on reflexology at the New York-Presbyterian Medical Center, researchers found that stimulating a point on the foot caused a particular part of the brain to light up on a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan. PET scans are computerized tomography machines that show in color parts of the brain where nerve cells are working during certain activities.
